The Affection of Depression of the Elderly Living Together and the Elderly Living Alone on Suicidal Ideation and the Moderating Effects of Personal Relation

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine what factors affect on suicidal ideation of the elderly living together and the elderly living alone, especially how the personal relation has the moderating effects. Data from 15,246 elder living in Gangwon province were analysed. The main findings were as follows. First, the suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone was higher than the elderly living together. Second, the suicidal ideation of men were higher than women in the group of the elderly living alone. Third, the suicidal ideation of the elderly was most strongly affected by depression and suicidal attempt. Fourth, physical health and age affected on suicidal ideation of the elderly. Fifth, the suicidal ideation of the elderly living together was affected by financial condition, but the elderly living alone was affected by problem drinking. Sixth, the frequency of contacts with neighborhood had moderating effects in the affection of depression on suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone. Finally, strategies of improving human contacts for suicide prevention of the elderly are suggested. This study has regional significance because it was conducted with large sampling in Gangwon province that has the highest ratio of suicide. But we need to generalize the results with caution considering regional limits.
